A month later, at a café in Paris, Lecoq sipped his Geierslay and admired the sunset over the Seine. He smiled wryly at his friends and said to Carot, “Did I tell you of the reaction in the Rue de Jérusalem when I submitted the report about our trip to Mexico?”

Carot shook his head. “No. I haven’t seen you since we returned.”

“They were displeased.”

“Ha. I’m surprised you retain your job.”

“I am in disgrace at the moment, but I am too valuable to be gotten rid of so casually.”

Hector Ratichon said, “You know too much, you mean.”

Père Tabaret said, “Come, Lecoq, we know you. What did you threaten them with?”

Carot said, “A little bird I know tells me Poiret has been sent to Berlin and told to say there for the time being.”

Ratichon said, “And I have heard that the entire Bureau is being overhauled. What did you say to them, Lecoq?”

Lecoq looked at the expectant faces of his friends–older, experienced, accomplished men, the kind he had always admired and tried to emulate–and felt a warm glow at the knowledge that he was not just accepted in their company, but a welcome part of it, and that he was about to please and surprise them.

He said, “I stopped in the ship’s hold before I went to the engine room. I thought a brief search of De Vega’s luggage might prove fruitful.” He removed a small glass bottle from his jacket pocket and held it up, for the others to see. Inside the bottle could be seen several writhing green worms. “I was right.”

“What about the others?” inquired Ratichon.

“Don de la Vega is back in California,” said Lecoq. “His cousin has, for all intents and purposes, vanished. As for Persano, I’ve made some inquiries since and found he served some particularly unforgiving masters. If his dip into the ocean didn’t finish him, I have no doubt that his employers will punish him for his failure, and justice will be served.”
